GRASSELLO

Plaster material with the depth of polished stone and heavy luster hosting traditional Italian techniques

Material Story

Grassello is a paste-like high-grade plaster made by aging lime, and due to its deep luster and overwhelming profoundness, it has been regarded as a symbol of Italian architectural beauty. It is an extremely close material to the traditional technique 'Stucco Antico' used by Carlo Scarpa, a representative architect of the 20th century, at the Banca Popolare di Verona, and it hosts a dignity that does not fade over time. The lime used as raw material for Grassello is baked limestone, which is then submerged in water and aged for about two years, becoming a supple paste that cannot be obtained with powder. This 'long-term aged lime' is the technique of hundreds of years in Italy, and the reason why it is called Grassello in Italian. Because it is made with luxurious effort, the value of the raw material is about 10 times that of general powdered lime. The finish wears a depth like marble, but the gloss is modest and has a calm expression. While heavy, it never glares, bringing quiet dignity to the space. It is also characterized by subtly changing expression depending on the angle of light, creating deep shadows and depth on the wall surface. In the Calce Rasata finish, by using 'INTONACO FIRENZE' containing aggregate for the base, blackish spots emerge, creating a texture like 'texture after shaving (Rasata)'. This subtle fluctuation brings a sex appeal and three-dimensionality peculiar to Italian plaster. The quiet light created by lime aged over time, the fluctuation created by the hands of craftsmen, and the rich expression inheriting historical techniques. Grassello is a one-of-a-kind plaster material that changes even the atmosphere of the space.
